Growing up during BET’s Golden Age, television and radio were our sources of entertainment. I remember tuning in to catch shows like Rap City, 106 & Park, and Uncut. Music videos were the heart of their programming.

After the music show ended, a crooked pastor took over the screen. Saturdays featured throwback videos and Rachel’s Caribbean show. Sundays were dedicated to gospel, featuring Bobby Jones and other remarkable gospel shows and shady pastors. It was a day when rap and R&B took a backseat.

Growing up in this era fills me with gratitude. I cannot believe we have instant access to music and movies through streaming services. I cherish the memories of purchasing CDs, cassettes, vinyl records, and VHS tapes.
